What are Parabens?

Parabens are cheap preservatives commonly used in many personal care products such as body lotions, body washes, skin care products and more.

How do they contribute to weight gain?

Parabens are a class of obesogens that are known hormone disrupters.  They mimic estrogen. As such, when applied to your skin through the use of body care products, the body may mistake parabens for estrogen, creating a disruption in your hormonal system.

Too much estrogen has been shown to contribute to weight gain and fluid retention.

Estrogen dominant weight gain typically unveils itself on your hips and thighs.

How do I know if my personal care products have parabens in them?

Fortunately, parabens are easy to find on labels.  You will always see the word “paraben” on the latter part of the ingredient.  Examples include: Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Methylparaben and Propylparaben

How do I avoid them?

They are easy to avoid.  More and more manufacturers are beginning to remove parabens from products and some are even labeling products as “paraben-free”.   I have found that most generic brands are more likely to use parabens as their preservative choice.
